Caitlyn Jenner Caught in the Middle: trans, conservative, priviledged

When is enough enough? When is someone enough like their own minority group to be accepted as part of that group? Clarence Thomas and Condoleezza Rice have been called sell outs, or Uncle Toms, because a person can’t be Republican and Black in some circles…apparently. Now Caitlyn Jenner is met with protests everywhere, because she is an “offense to women” and to trans people everywhere…apparently.

The Middle continues to disappear as a discussion point in America, and yet there are more and more people getting caught in the middle. Watch the video below of the small handful of protestors going after Caitlyn Jenner in Chicago. To me this makes as much sense as the Yale aggression over a Halloween costume email.

Should minorities (racial, religious, age, class, or gender/sexuality) expect others in their grouping to be exactly like them on all sub-issues relating to their world? Or should there be a place for sub-classifications of minorities to exist without being harassed by their own people?

The disappearing middle and what to do about it is discussed in Burning Religion: navigating the impossible space between religion and secular society.

  1. This is insane. I’ve seen loads of negative press towards Caitlyn Jenner ever since she began her transition- I just don’t get why people feel the need to be so mean. Or if you have a problem then discuss it properly with justification instead of writing some abusive Twitter comment using the wrong pronouns for effect. Drives me mad some people do.

    1. I’m with you on that, Jess. Angers me as well. Some of those who feel they are an oppressed minority demand that anyone who fits their definition, fits it exactly to their specifications. If Caitlyn was politically liberal, poor, and yelling at the world she might be accepted by these particular people in the LGBTQ community. It is sad.
